Telekom to implement 5G trial operation in the country's metropolitan area
2021/12/07
【Kuala Lumpur】Telecommunications giant, Telekom Malaysia (TM), which is a government-owned telecommunications company, announced on the 4th that they will start testing 5G (5th generation mobile communication) network availability in parts of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya this month.
TM is the first to participate in the 5G test drive, although it is undisclosed if the company has exchanged a long term contract with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) for long term use of 5G network services.
According to Reuters, the company has not reached an agreement with DNB for the use of the network, and telecom operators have expressed concerns over pricing issues and network deployment.
The government initially planned to use the method of allocating frequency bands to telecommunications carriers, but changed the scheme into entrusting newly established DNB with the construction of the network, which would then become a frequency bands wholesaler.
DNB plans to install around 500 power stations in the capital area. Once it is made available for the whole nation, it is projected to have 7,509 locations by 2024.
