2022/05/09

【Kuala lumpur= Malaysia BIZ Navi】 On the 3rd of May, in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day, the Reporters Without Border (RSF) published the "World press freedom index" for 2022. In this index, Malaysia went up six places to the 113th among 180 countries, an improvement from last year.

The RSF has changed its evaluation criteria this year, to be based on the influence of these five indicators: ▽politics▽economy▽law▽society▽safety. Malaysia ranked 73rd in "safety" and 88th in "economy," but 122nd in "politics" and 128th in "society," with a particularly low ranking of 155th in "law".

Noted in this report is the political pressure exerted onto the media by the government in restraining any criticism or attacks onto the politicians and bureaucrats, reporting censorship on sensitive issues regarding the implemantation of the sultanate. Malaysian journalists are rarely targets of physical attacks but were subject to judicial harassment and slander campaigns.
Malaysia is the only highest ranked country in Southeast Asia's valuation as compared to other ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) members: Thailand (115), Indonesia (117), Singapore (139), Cambodia (142), Brunei (144), Philippines (147), Laos (161), Vietnam (174), Myanmar (176).

On the top of the rank is Norway, Demark and Sweden and other Nordic coutnries. Japan is ranked the 71st. Russia, which has been criticized for its suppression in the media industry by the Putin administration, ranked 155th, while countries like China (175), and North Korea were at the bottom of the list.
