2022/01/21

【Kuala Lumpur =Malaysia BIZ Navi】 Malaysian Automobile Association (MAA) revealed that car sales for 2021 were at 508,911, lower by 3,89% from the previous year.

Sale of private vehicles were lower by 5.89% at 452,663 units whereas commercial vehicles were increased by 15.87% at 56,248 units. Sales of standard cars, window vans, multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs), prime movers, and buses have decreased meanwhile. sales of four-wheel drive vehicles/SUVs, panel vans, pickups, and trucks have increased.
Although restriction movement orders (MCO) and lockdown placed a restriction that negatively impacted the manufacturing and sales business activities, the resumption of economic activity and the continuation of sales tax exemption measures will be able to offset these negative effects. Sales of private vehicle have declined, but commercial vehicle sales started to increase due to the recovery in industrial activity.

Daihatsu-affiliated, Perodua (Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua) remained as the top manufacturer despite sales have decreased from 220,163 the previous year to 190,291 units. As Proton Holdings, Toyota and Mitsubishi increased their sales volume, their market share shrank from 41.7% in the previous year to 37.4%.

Similar to last year, Proton was in second place. Sales increased to 111,695 units from 108,524 units the previous year. Proton's market share increased for two years in a row, to 21.9% compared to 20.5% the year before.

Toyota moved up to the third place ahead of Honda (ranked 4th) who was ranked third last year. Honda's sales plummeted from 60,468 to 53,031 and loosing market share from 11.4% to 10.4%.5th place goes to Mitsubishi. Their sales increased significantly from 9,163 units to 17,4895, allowing them a bigger market share of 3.4% from 1.7% previously.
Production for 2021 was at 481,651 units, slightly lower by 0.73% from the previous year. This was due to production halt from the lockdown in June. Private vehicle production declined by 2.47% to 446,431 units, while commercial vehicle production increased by 28.39% to 35,220 units.
MAA's sales forecast for 2022 is based on the following factors: (1) recovery of global and domestic economy (2) extension of sales tax exemption until the end of June (3) continued low interest rate policies (4) recovery of consumer spending (5) launch of new models (6) Covid-19 cycle (7) shortage of semiconductors (8) unpredictable local political situation, etc. Despite these concerns, the forecast is still higher at 17.9% compared to 2021, to 600,000 units. The forecast for private vehicles is up 19.3% to 540,000 units, while the forecast for commercial vehicles also rose to 6.7% to 60,000 units.
