International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference (IGEM) 2022
Event Overview
The International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference (IGEM) has established itself as Southeast Asia’s largest trade event for green technologies and eco solutions. Over the past 12 years, it has been the catalyst that plays a vital role in green economic growth in the Southeast Asia region. This event aims to bring together industrial thinkers, experts, and green technology businesses to share their knowledge on green technology and discuss on possible solutions to address the global climate change crisis. The main objective of this event is to provide exposure to the industry, government, and public on green technologies and how everyone can play their part in addressing climate change.
The organizer and co-organizer of the event was the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) and the Malaysia Green Technology & Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) respectively. The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) under the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MITI) were the event’s strategic partner whilst Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) were the event’s business matching partner.
Since its establishment in 2010, this event has successfully attracted more than 500,000 visitors from more than 70 countries with over RM300 billion in investments. IGEM 2022 expects to attract RM 3 billion in business leads with more than 300 exhibitors from over 30 countries, succeeding the past events whereby IGEM 2020, being the first virtual event, managed to garner RM 3.4 billion in business leads followed by RM 4.6 billion the following year at IGEM 2021.
IGEM 2022 took place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) from October 12 to 14 with physical exhibitions, conferences, and business matchmaking and network opportunities. IGEM 2022 theme was "Race Towards Net Zero: Fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) Commitments " in alignment with the government's goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050, with emphasis on these four main issues, empowering cities, electrifying mobility, decarbonising energy, and accelerating circularity.
International participation
China, Taiwan, Netherlands, Canada, South Korea, Singapore, and Austria were the few delegates from 30 participating countries. Platinum sponsor, Envision Digital (headquartered in Singapore), signed a partnership agreement with MGTC to jointly develop a low-carbon operating system that can track carbon emissions in real time.
The Netherlands exhibited at its own pavilion with 10 participating companies and research institutes. Ambassador-Designate at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Malaysia emphasized on the importance in strengthening relations with Malaysia in achieving a circular economy by 2050.
Taiwan also held a special exhibition in an effort to foster business collaborations in the sustainability sector between Malaysia and Taiwan. A local Malaysian celebrity has been chosen to represent Taiwan Excellence ESG programme and will take part in an environmental protection workshop at local high schools. In order to encourage green conservation on campus, reduce waste, and instil a passion for environmental conservation in the next generation, this ambassador will also guide students in planting hibiscus seedlings, Malaysia's national flower, that has been cultivated in biodegradable seedling bags imported from Taiwan.
International Electric Motor Exhibition
IGEM 2022 established a new international electric motor exhibition based on the "Low Carbon Mobility Print 2021-2030" announced by the Ministry of Environment and Water in 2021. The plan includes the introduction of more than 10,000 electric vehicle chargers by 2025 and the conversion of all government vehicles to electric vehicles by 2030, etc. To achieve these goals, IGEM became the platform for electric vehicle manufacturers to promote and showcase their latest technology and innovation for electric vehicles.
Proton Holdings Bhd, an automotive manufacturer, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Gentari Sdn Bhd, a clean energy subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd, to establish its presence in the national EV and NEV (New Energy Vehicle) segment in Malaysia. In August 2021, Proton concluded an exclusive distributorship agreement with smart (a German electric carmaker owned by Mercedes-Benz and Geely) and established Proton New Energy Technology (PRO-NET) in September. One of the first plans are to install 20 DC charges in 2023 in which, PRO-NET will be providing charging locations and power supply facilities while Gentari will be providing charging infrastructure and operatorship solutions.
Another automobile and heavy machinery distributor is UMW Holdings Bhd. UMW Holdings Bhd’s wholly owned subsidiary, UMW Grantt International Sdn Bhd, has introduced its maiden range of bio-hydraulic lubricant product made from locally sourced palm oil. UMW M&E Sdn Bhd, another subsidiary of UMW Holdings, signed a memorandum of understanding with Mitsui (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to promote and market UMW’s proprietary green products and services to markets centred around ASEAN and other overseas markets by leveraging on Mitsui's global sales and marketing foothold in response to the growing demand for sustainable products and services.
Conference & Seminar
There were 15 conference and seminars involving 30 speakers and 9 conference partners, which engaged in a wide range of discussions related to this year's theme. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Water discussed future initiatives and action plans to help Malaysia achieve its goal of becoming a carbon neutral nation by 2050, with experts from the United Nations, the Security Commission, local renewable energy and solar companies, and other participating countries.
There were also conferences regarding Low Carbon City where local municipal authorities participated and discussed on the arising issues revolving the way to reduce the carbon emissions within their municipal. There were also topics such as Hydrogen Energy, energy efficiency, waste management, water management and recycling economy discussed during the conference.
Since Malaysia is prone to unexpected natural disasters such as floods and droughts, it is important to create awareness on climate change crisis. IGEM hopes to serve as an educational venue in educating Malaysians about climate change and to produce more technological innovators from local education and research institutions.
